1936, served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1964 gaining the rank of Colonel. He married Evelyn Lewis, daughter of Henry and Emma Lewis, 7 Jan 1946. They have 6 children: Mary Ann of Detroit, Ml; Elllen of Dallas, TX; Joseph of Dallas; Emma (married to Jeff Jovan) living in Dallas; Anne (married to Ed Lucas) and parents of: James, Greg, Stephen, Adam and Christina living in Richardson, TX and John (married Jodi Gilmore) parents of: Emily living in Dallas. Ambrose and Evelyn are both retired and live in Dallas.
Valeria graduated from the Fort Atkinson Public High School in 1937, Mt. Mercy Jr. College, Cedar Rapids, IA in 1939 and received her BA in 1958 from Iowa State Teacher’s College and MA in 1972 from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA. Valeria began a teaching career of 47 years in a rural school in Jackson Twp. that continued in Calmar, Waucoma and Turkey Valley schools. She retired in 1986.
Valeria has traveled widely and is currently living a very active life in Fort Atkinson.
Martin and Mayme (Baker) Herald
Cletus graduated from Fort Atkinson Public High School in 1942. He married Anita Stammeyer, daughter of Peter and Lena Stammeyer, 19 Jul 1958. They farmed the family farm until their recent retirement. Cletus and Anita are the parents of 4 children: Timothy (married Lyn Lehman, parents of Zac, now married to Connie Gast) living in rural Swisher; Thomas (married to Becky Flint) living in rural Van Meter, IA; Jennifer (married to Pete Schaack and parents of a daughter Grace) living in Austin, TX; Matthew (married Lori Kuennen) living on the family farm. Cletus was very active in civic affairs holding offices in the Jackson Twp. School District, Fort Atkinson Farmer’s Co-op and the County Conservation Commission. Cletus and Anita are now enjoying retirement on an acreage west of Fort Atkinson.
Anastasia graduated from the Fort Atkinson Public High School in 1946, from Mt. Mercy Jr. College, Cedar Rapids in 1948. She received her BA in 1959 from Iowa State Teacher’s College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa. Anastasia had a teaching career of 32 years beginning in Calmar, continuing in Elma and West Union and retired from Turkey Valley School in May of 1991. She married Cyril Kriener son of Peter and Mary Kriener 16 Aug 1966. They are the parents of 2 children: Margaret (married Paul Woodruff, parents of Jordan) living in Glenwood, IA; and Martin living in Cresco, IA. Cyril and Anastasia farmed for 30 years and are now retired on their farm four miles southwest of Fort Atkinson.
Rosemary graduated from the Waucoma Public High School in 1951 and from Mt. Mercy Jr. College, Cedar Rapids in 1953. She received her BA in 1959 from Iowa State Teacher’s College, now known as the University of Northern Iowa. Rosemary taught school in Alpha, Strawberry Point, West Union and St. Lucas. Rosemary and Leo Kriener, son of Peter and Mary Kriener, were married 4 Aug 1962 by the Rev. Stephen Kucera in St. John’s Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson. They have 6 children: Anne (married Dave Blocker, parents of Katherine and Martin) living in Waukon, IA; Evelyn (married Myron Milbrandt, parents of Cassandra and Nolan) living in rural Waucoma; Linda (married Joseph Jones, parents of Xavier) living in Germany; Richard (married to Nancy Monsrud) living in Cresco; Arnold (married to Rene Bushman, parents of Kyleigh and Jared) living in rural Fort Atkinson and Joseph living in Iowa City. Leo and Rosemary are currently farming 6 miles southwest of Fort Atkinson.

Leonard Clement Hertges is the son of Mike and Annie Hertges. Viola Emma Wepler
is the daughter of J. Elmer and Inga Wepler (see J.E. Wepler story). Leonard and Viola were married 17Aug 1942 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Decorah. They have 4 children: Ann Marie , Richard Larry, Cheryl Kay and James Allen. Ann and Richard were born at St. Mary’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, IA; Cheryl and James in the Decorah Hospital.

Ann Marie graduated from South Winneshiek High School with honors and did secretarial work after graduation. On 5 Oct 1963 Ann Marie married Floyd Schmitt at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Calmar. They were married by Floyd’s brother Father Carl Schmitt. Floyd and Ann Marie have 6 beautiful daughters: Angela, Gina, Jennifer, Julie
